Heartbeat

Heartbeat

I finished my workout this morning with my hands shaking and a wave of anxiety creeping in, my heart pounding through my chest even though nothing about the session was meant to be intense. Something inside me was clearly getting worse. I sat with that thought for a few minutes, telling myself I’d had a full health check earlier this year, how much could really change in just a few months, but in the end decided a couple of thousand bucks wasn’t worth gambling on an answer.

The constantly climbing heart rate

Twenty minutes later someone was drawing blood from my arm. By mid-day the reports were in, and finally I knew what was wrong.

Put it all together, the weight falling off faster than I’d expect, a resting heart rate that refuses to come down, breathing that feels laboured, an ache settled into my body, and the story is right there in the following snippet from the test results.

So tomorrow is the doctor’s visit, and I’m hoping it turns out to be the least of the three evils I’ve managed to shortlist as possible causes. I’m just glad that beyond a light workout today and a brisk walk last evening, I stayed put for the rest of the week. Things could have turned ugly otherwise.
