Haircut
A few days ago I caught myself staring in the mirror. The beard and hair overgrowth had started to irk me, but back to back office commitments left no real window for a barber visit.
Two evenings ago I went out for what was supposed to be a walk, and halfway through decided to skip it and squeeze in the grooming session I badly needed instead. I came home, showered, and sat down for dinner. We all had a decent chat, nothing unusual. Fast forward to today, my wife looks at me and says that since I’m due for a haircut anyway, could I take our son along for his. I pointed at my own head and beard. She looked at me for a second, genuinely puzzled, and said, oh, when did you get a haircut?
I hadn’t shaved my head or anything drastic, but I looked noticeably different from before. I joked that she must really look at me that closely if I had to physically point at my own face for her to notice. She flushed, then shot back, do you ever notice when I get waxing done? 😂
It was a fun little exchange, but it also made me realize something, we’ve both stopped actually seeing each other, even when we’re looking right at each other.
That made me a little sad. I already know there’s a chasm between us, I don’t know why, but this one hit harder than I expected.
